Salem Red Sox ride Couch, end Pelicans’ winning streak

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans lost to the Salem Red Sox 5-3 on Wednesday night, snapping the team’s four-game winning streak.

The Red Sox got seven innings from starter Keith Couch who notched his tenth win if the season. He out-dueled Pelicans starter Kyle Devore, who also went seven innings. Hanser Alberto drove in two Pelican runs.

The Red Sox started the game hot, Devore walked leadoff hitter Heiker Meneses and then threw away an Alberto Ibarra bunt single to put runners immediately on second and third. Michael Almanzar and Brandon Jacobs drove in both runners with a ground ball and a sacrifice fly. The Pelicans responded in the bottom of the first. Odubel Herrera kept up his hot hitting with a triple in the right-center gap. He was driven in on a sac fly by Hanser Alberto. Brett Nicholas then doubled and Vinny DiFazio was hit by a pitch but couch was able to get out of it and cruise from there. The Red Sox manufactured another run in the second for a 3-1 lead.

Couch, who is 6’2, got very comfortable from there on out. He didn’t allow another Myrtle Beach until the seventh and induced 12 ground balls. Kyle Devore was equally as good after the second inning, pitching a career high seven innings while allowing three runs, two earned.

Both teams were able to push across two runs in the eighth off of relievers. Pelican reliever Jon Edwards walked in Adalberto Ibarra and later in the inning Sean Coyle drove in Almanzar on a sac fly. The birds responded with two off Sox reliever Andrew Jones. Hanser Alberto hit another sac fly to drive in Chris Grayson and Brett Nicholas drove in Herrera with a single to make it 5-3 which would be the final.

The Pelicans and Red Sox face off in the final game of the four game series on Thursday night. Second half call-ups face off as Luke Jackson (5-1) takes on Michael McCarthy, who is making his third start in the Carolina League. With the loss and a Winston-Salem extra inning win, the Pelicans fall back to two and a half games back for first place in the Southern Division.  It is the final “Thirsty Thursday” of the season and first pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
