Sardinas celebrates birthday with four-hit night at plate

Luis Sardinas tallied four hits and drove in a career-best five runs Thursday as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (26-14) beat the Winston-Salem Dash 12-3 at BB&T Ballpark.

The Birds pounded out a season-best 18 hits and took two of three from the Dash, scoring 21 runs in the final two games of the series.

The short stop, on his 20th birthday, tallied eight hits in the series, after going hitless in the series- opener. He is now hitting .307 on the season.

The 12 runs matches the most from the Pelicans in a game this season. Eight of nine starters recorded at least one hit while all nine reached base. Trever Adams and Kevin Torres each tallied three hits, while Rougned Odor, Royce Bolinger and Chris Grayson contributed two apiece.

Leading 6-1 heading into the seventh inning, the Pelicans broke the game wide open, scoring five runs and sending ten men to the plate. In addition to Sardinas’ two-run double, the Birds got an RBI double from Adams and an RBI single from Torres in the frame.

Right-hander Jerad Eickhoff (3-2) worked six innings of one-run, four-hit baseball and earned the win. Right-hander Chris Beck (2-6) lost his fifth straight game, allowing four earned runs on nine this over five innings.

The Pelicans scored three runs in the first inning to take the early lead. Jake Skole fueled the rally with an RBI double. Odor and Bolinger also contributed RBI singles.

Grant Buckner put the Dash on the board in the second inning with an RBI single to cut the margin to two but Sardinas added a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning and a two-run triple in the sixth inning to gain separation. The Birds twice led by as many as ten runs in the game.

The Pelicans have won nine of their last 10 games and lead the southern division by 7.5 games. The Birds head to Wilmington to begin a three-game series Friday. Right-hander Alec Asher (3-2, 3.10) will be opposed by left-hander John Lamb (2-3, 5.79). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
