Seahawks’ backups spark playoff win over Hanahan

mbfoot-22stiffDespite suffering a painful 1-2 punch of injury and suspension to a pair of key players, Myrtle Beach (11-1) saw their backups deliver knockout performances in the Seahawks’ 46-34 victory over visiting Hanahan in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs.

Senior quarterback Jake Deskins got the start in place of junior Drayton Arnold, who is out with a broken thumb, and the Seahawks’ didn’t miss a beat behind the transplanted tight end. Deskins completed 16 of 22 passes for three touchdowns to keep the offense on pace.

Two of those TD passes went to receiver Kyle Belack, who played double duty on defense to replace suspended starter Kelton Greene. Belack made three interceptions in the first half to help the Seahawks hold Hanahan in check and advance to the third round of the playoffs.

The top-seeded Seahawks move on to face Marlboro County next week. The second-seeded Bulldogs upset Swansea 19-8 on Friday, and will travel to Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium on Friday night. The Seahawks and Bulldogs have a long history of exciting playoff showdowns.

Deskins quickly erased any concerns about the Myrtle Beach offense by leading the Seahawks down the field on their opening drive. Running back Brandon Sinclair, who shouldered much of the burden for Myrtle Beach’s offense, scored the first of three TD runs with a 1-yard dive.

Hanahan blocked the first of three PATS on the night to trail 6-0, but Belack quickly made his presence known of the other side of the ball with a 37-yard pick-six. Belack capped a productive first half by catching a 34-yard TD strike from Deskins and intercepting two more passes, including one to kill a Hanahan drive at the half.

Hanahan QB Walter Fagan threw TD passes to Corbin Heyward and Sam Denmark to try to keep pace but the Seahawks carried a 33-14 lead into halftime. Deskins and Belack saved their best plays of the night for the first drive of the second half, capped by Deskins’ scramble and throw to a leaping Belack in the end zone to make it 40-14.

Hanahan tried to make it interesting as Vontre Howard ran for a pair of TDs and Fagan connected with receiver Greg Casselman to cut the deficit to 46-34 with just over 2 minutes remaining. But Keyonte Sessions blocked the PAT to keep it a two-possession game and Deskins and Sinclair were able to run out the clock and put the game away.
