Golf: Seahawks top Chiefs; Sharks finish off rival Braves

mbgolf-teamRegular-season region championships in golf are more about bragging rights than any strategic postseason advantage. With the Region 7-4A, Lower State and State tournaments set for next week, the big prizes are still up for grabs.

But when the region includes two of the top three boys golf teams in the state, as was the case with No. 2 Myrtle Beach and No. 3 North Myrtle Beach in Wednesday’s regular-season finale at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club, the pressure was on to get the inside edge going into the postseason. The fact that the two schools are big rivals added to the drama.

But in the end, it was Myrtle Beach claiming a 154-158 victory over the Chiefs, thanks to a strong even-par performance by medalist Dock Jarman. His nine-hole tally of 36 led a balanced Seahawks’ scoring effort. Keegan Vaught fired a 37, Holden Grigg shot 40, and Seth Boyce rounded out the foursome with a 41. All four players have medaled for Myrtle Beach over a hectic three-week stretch.

“Dock came through for us today, and it’s good to know that all our guys are capable of putting up low numbers,” said Myrtle Beach coach Lowell Counce. “We’ve got a great group. The get serious on the golf course and they have fun together when they’re off it.”

North Myrtle Beach has gone toe-to-toe with the Seahawks in tournament play this season, and the Chiefs challenged after shooting a team score of 149 in a win over St. James on Tuesday. Matthew Griego and Chandler Casey shot 37s and McClure Thompason and David Lamb shot 42s on Wednesday.

The Chiefs will travel to Aiken on Thursday to play in the Southern Cross Golf Tournament against a strong national field. They return to get home course advantage when they host the region tournament at Eagles Nest Golf Course.

* St. James 155, Socastee 172: The Sharks finished the regular season with a victory over the rival Braves.

St. James was led by freshman Drew Galloway, earned medalist honors with a 1-over-par 36. Teammates Coleman Bess (39), Charlie Wike (40), and Walker Devers (40) rounded out the Sharks’ foursome.

Socastee was led by Shane Peters with a 38, and Grant Hutchison pitched in with a 44. Three Braves – Kingston Armstrong, Chap Hutchison and Jake Del Busse, were contributors to the days competition with identical 45s.

Both teams head into region championships Monday.
