Seahawks seek to mark state title off to-do list

The Myrtle Beach High volleyball team has had Saturday’s date marked on its calendar for a long time. In fact, exactly one year.

That’s when the Seahawks tasted the thrill of advancing to the Class 4A state championship, and the bitterness of being swept on the sport’s biggest stage. Even more painful was the knowledge that they didn’t play their best game in the biggest match of the year, a mistake they don’t plan to make when they face Pickens for the state title Saturday.

“When we lost in state finals last year to Aiken, we came back with the goal to get back to Columbia,” said head coach Larry Church. “We set that goal at the first of the year. Of course, you take them one match at a time, but our expectation was to get back here this year.”

This is the third time for the Myrtle Beach program to reach the state finals in the past six years, and the Seahawks hope this one is the charm. Church has been gradually building the program into a state power, but that involves scratching a state championship of their to-do list.

“It’s funny, this is my 18th year at Myrtle Beach High so prior to me being there there wasn’t much of an expectation for anything beyond region play,” Church said. “To get to the state finals … it’s been really rewarding for me to see the kids take on that challenge.”

This group of Seahawks have been particularly prominent in helping the team reach the next level. Featuring eight seniors and a core group that have been playing together both in high school and the Grand Strand Juniors program for years, Myrtle Beach is finally ready to reach the ultimate goal.

“Last year didn’t know what to expect completely because none of had been to states before,” said senior Danni Hix. “But this year we will be more prepared and know what to expect.”

“We know how it feels to lose now,” fellow senior Lexi Watts added, “and we don’t want to don’t want to feel like that again.”

The Seahawks try to taske the next step at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Chapin High. Tickets are available at Myrtle Beach High School until 3 p.m. Friday, online at https://gofan.co/app/school/SCHSL, or at Chapin High School starting at 9 a.m. Saturday.
