Seahawks, Sharks run table but no title in Mingo Bay

Blame it on the rain or blame it on the Mingo Bay Classic tournament format, but you can’t point a finger at the Myrtle Beach High pitching staff.

The Seahawks (11-7) completed a perfect 4-0 record in the national tournament on Saturday with an 8-2 victory over McClancy (NY), the only runs allowed by Myrtle Beach all week. The Seahawks had a four-game shutout streak dating back to last week.

However, because all of Thursdays games were washed out, tournament organizers opted not to hold the championship round in order to hold another full day of pool play. The move snapped a two-year streak of local champions (Socastee in 2012, St. James in 2011).

Myrtle Beach jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and settled in to ride the cruise control that has been its untouchable pitching staff. But McClancy did the unthinkable in the fourth inning, scoring the first run against the Seahawks since a March 27 loss to Elizabethton (TN).

With Myrtle Beach’s arms on short rest from a busy week, Andrew Morris, Michael Calamari and Zach Coble combined to scatter seven hits over seven innings. Wilson Wicker and Critter Collins had key hits and Jesse Nelson, Daniel Miller and Coble drove in runs for the Seahawks.

* St. James 3, Glouchester (NY) 2: The Sharks (12-4) also wrapped up a 5-0 week in Mingo Bay play but were unable to play for the championship due to a weather-shortened schedule despite their win over the No. 12-ranked team in New York.

St. James starting pitcher Anders DeShields pitched a complete-game one-hitter but found himself in a 2-0 hole entering the bottom of the fourth inning before the Sharks’ bats came to life.

St. James’ Carter Brakefield went a perfect 3-for-3 on the day and Trent Revis went 2-for-3. Brandon Pugliese and  Brock Gallagher drove in the game-tying and game-winning runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and DeShields closed it out to keep the Sharks perfect in Mingo Bay play.

St. James also defeated Catholic by a 10-1 score earlier in the day.
