Seahawks steamroll Chiefs; host Manning in first round

This year’s rivalry between North Myrtle Beach and Myrtle Beach was expected to be closer than recent meetings. Instead, it was more of the same in a 55-0 blowout victory by Myrtle Beach.

The Seahawks (9-1 overall, 4-1 Region 7-3A) dominated the new and improved Chiefs (4-6, 0-5), who earned more victories in 2012 than in their past three seasons combined but lost their last five games to miss out on a winning season.

It was the usual culprit sending the Chiefs into the offseason with a tough loss, and Friday’s Senior Night at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium was no different. The Seahawks scored 31 unanswered points in the first half and cake-walked their way to a No. 2 seed in next week’s Class 3A state playoffs.

Despite swirling winds from the approaching Hurricane Sandy, Myrtle Beach senior quarterback Tyler Keane threw the ball with ease, connecting on three TD passes on the night. He hit fellow senior Sean Michael Orcutt with a strike from 35 yards out on the opening series for a quick 7-0 lead.

Keane found senior receiver CJ Cooper open for a 6-yard TD strike on the ensuing series, and senior placekicker Max Huggins booted a 57-yard field goal to make it 17-0 at the end of the first quarter. Orcutt caught another TD pass from Keane, who rushed for a 9-yard TD  for a 31-0 halftime advantage.

Huggins kicked another field goal, Malik Waring hauled in a TD pass and Brandon Sinclair ran one in from 1 yard out to put the game on ice. A JV player who was not listed on the roster scored the final TD for the Seahawks by stripping the ball and rumbling 52 yards to paydirt.

The Seahawks will take the No. 2 seed into the Class 3A playoffs next week against visiting Manning (7-3). Myrtle Beach has entered the playoffs as the region champion and No. 1 seed the previous six seasons and will likely have to win on the road to return to the state championship game.
