Bess wins Open division of annual Guy Daniels Surfoff

The 13th annual Guy Daniels Surfoff concluded Sunday in Surfside Beach.

Held in small conditions and often delayed due to weather, the event was considered a success in its main goal; to honor a fellow surfer, and allow local surfers to compete while raising money for local scholarships.

150 participants hit the beach this morning to conclude the two-day event.

Shawn Bess just beat out Tyson Miller for the Open title, while North Myrtle Beach’s John Quinones picked up the Mens Title. Well known local, Phil “DJ QP” Jackson won the Masters division. Terry Green came in 1st in the Womens division.

“It was a great event; lots of fun, little bit of sun and most importantly significant funds raised for our Scholarship Fund,” said foundation member Mikey Pruitt.

The surf off feeds the Guy Daniels memorial fund which provides scholarships to local students based on need. The foundation awarded $1,000 to eight students this year. Over $53,000 has been given to local students during the foundations existence.

Guy Daniels, a Surfside Beach native collapsed on the beach while jogging in 1999. A rising sophomore at the College of Charleston and a Deans List student, he also served as a Life Guard and worked in a local Surf shop.
