Socastee boys, NMB girls make waves to titles

The Socastee boys and North Myrtle Beach girls swam away with the team championships in Saturday’s North Myrtle Beach Invitational on Saturday, beating out eight other schools for the titles.

Socastee’s Walker Harwell won the the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke individually and also led the Braves in a pair of relays for a team total of 165, blowing away the closest competition in West Florence (85) and Sumter (79).

Carolina Forest and St. James finished tied for fifth place with 40 points, Myrtle Beach (32) was seventh and North Myrtle Beach (21) finished eighth.

Socastee teammates Eddie Bateson claimed the 500 meter freestyle, Jess Perl won the 200 individual medley and Ryan Sutton won the 100 butterfly. All four combined to give the Braves a victory in the 200 freestyle and 200 medley relays.

In girls action, North Myrtle Beach (137) defeated runner-up Carolina Forest (101) for the title. Socastee (49) placed fifth and Myrtle Beach and St. James finished tied for seventh with 18 points apiece.

North Myrtle Beach’s Meredith Siler won the 50 freestyle, Rachael Houston took the 100 butterfly and Jarrett McCray captured the 100 breast stroke. The Lady Chiefs also won the 200 and 400 freestyle relays with Siler, Houston, Rayni Newman and Barbara Long, who also had a second place finish in the 200 individual medley.  The 200-yard medley relay team of April Ratley, McCray, Kaitlyn Buschak and McKenzie King placed second with a time of 2:11.56.

Long also had a second place finish in the 200-yard individual medley (2:26.77).  Third place finishers for North Myrtle Beach were Long (100-yard freestyle, 59.60) and Siler (100-yard backstroke, 1:09.98).

Myrtle Beach’s Maggie Langdale won the 100 freestyle and backstroke, while Carolina Forest’s Brianna Strang claimed the 200 and 500 freestyle events.
