Baseball: Braves slide into playoffs with region sweep

socbase-1slideThe Socastee High baseball team completed its clean sweep of Region 7-3A and recorded its record-tying 21st win of the season on Monday, matching the output of Lower State finalist squad.

Now the top-seeded Braves (21-4 overall, 10-0 region) hope to rack up even more victories in the playoffs following their regular-season finale against Georgetown. They defeated the visiting Bulldogs 15-8 to wrap up the campaign.

Pitchers on both sides had a tough day as the two teams put up 23 combined runs and 26 hits, eight of them for extra bases. Socastee appeared to have everything under control after building a 9-0 early lead by the Bulldogs put up seven in the fourth inning to make things interesting.

A sacrifice fly by Bubba Martin and a two-run home run by Buck Bacot in the second inning helped the Socastee Braves put some runs on the board early. Bacot racked up five RBIs on three hits to lead the Braves’ bats. Braves responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame and three more in the fifth to regain control.

Trevor Bigham recorded the win for the Socastee Braves even though he allowed six runs over 3 1/3 innings. He struck out six, walked one and gave up five hits.

The Braves will host Hanahan on Friday in the first round of the district tournament, while Georgetown will have a tiebreaker with Myrtle Beach to decide the No. 2 seed. The winner will host James Island while the loser must travel to Hilton Head.

* St. James 6, Waccamaw 3: The Sharks rallied for three runs in the sixth inning to defeat the visiting Warriors in their regular season finales.

Steven Manz and Trent Revis went 2-for-4 and Manz and Liam Bloom had two RBIs apiece to lead the Sharks at the plate, while Drake Martin and Joey Larkin also drove in runs. Skylar Hays pitched three innings to get the win and Ty King earned the save.

No. 4-seeded St. James travels to Berkeley on Friday for the first round of the district playoffs.
