Socastee tops MB to reach Baseball at the Beach final

Socastee exploded for five runs in the fourth inning and the Myrtle Beach defense imploded for four errors in the field in Friday’s featured matchup of the Baseball at the Beach Tournament.

The Braves (3-0) broke open a scoreless game by batting around the order in the fourth frame, taking advantage of two Seahawks’ miscues to capture control of the game and earn a spot in Saturday’s championship game.

Myrtle Beach starting pitcher Praise Thorsen had three scoreless innings before the fourth-inning breakdown to take the loss. Teammate Andrew Morris went 3-for-3 at the plate and the Seahawks (1-1) outhit the Braves by an 8-7 margin.

But they couldn’t rattle a pair of Socastee pitchers as starter Sam McKinney (1-0) scattered four hits over four innings and Matt Wright worked the final three innings, enticing a pair of double plays to claim his first save.

* Socastee 4, Fort Mill 1: Zach Hyde delivered a pair of RBI doubles and the Braves’ pitchers ensured that it was enough offense to defeat the Yellow Jackets.

Socastee’s Austin Schmitz scattered four hits over four innings and Kyle Smith pitched two innings of scoreless relief, including a sixth inning-ending double play and a 1-2-3 seventh inning. Fort Mill scored one run in the first inning but never crossed home plate again.

* Myrtle Beach 5, Aynor 3: The Seahawks scored four runs in the first two innings and starting pitcher Landon Edwards made it hold up against the visiting Blue Jackets.

With a four-run lead in his pocket, Edwards pitched four scoreless innings before running into trouble in the fifth. Aynor cut the deficit in half with a pair of runs but the Seahawks added an insurance run in the bottom of the frame and held on for a 5-3 victory.

Lukas Ray went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and Edwards got a hit to help his own cause. Ray struck out six batters as the Yellow Jackets outhit the Seahawks by a 5-4 margin. Aynor also had four errors to only two for Myrtle Beach.
