Soccer: Seahawks shut out Sharks; Panthers sweep SF

mbsoc-21headerThe Myrtle Beach High boys soccer team got a small measure of revenge against Region 7-3A rival St. James on Tuesday night, shutting out the Sharks 5-0 in a rematch of last year’s Class 3A Lower State Championship Game.

After dropping a 5-1 decision to St. James to miss out on a shot at a Class 3A state title appearance, the Seahawks (8-1 overall, 3-0 region) wasted little time getting some payback at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.

Myrtle Beach’s Elijah Rice scored two goals, and Nick Beauchamp, Shavoy Brown and Foster Russell added scores to lead the Seahawks’ rout. Abdul Mashrifov got the hat trick in assists with three, and Alan Vasquez and Lenin Molina had one apiece.

The Sharks (4-3, 1-2) suffered their second straight region loss after falling to Georgetown for the first time in school history. Myrtle Beach is tied with the Bulldogs atop the region standings.

* Carolina Forest 4, South Florence 2: The Panthers (3-4, 2-2) leveled their region record with a victory over the Bruins.

Carolina Forest sophomore Anthony Powalie tallied two goals, and teammates Alan Rosas and Amir Elkasaab added one goal apiece to pace the Panthers.

* Socastee 9, Conway 1: The Braves defeated the Tigers in a Region 6-4A matchup to improve their 8-3 record overall  and 4-0 in the region.

Socastee’s Connor Fata, Chris Matlashewski and Cian Gormley scored two goals apiece, and Tanner Goshert, Ridardo Farinas and Nick Koonce had one each. Goshert made three assists, Konner Price had two and Fata had one. Starting goalkeeper Cole Renfrow made three saves and John Cetin added one in relief.

The Braves play next in the Soccer at the Beach Tournament at Myrtle Beach High school next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday during spring break.

Girls

* Carolina Forest 7, South Florence 0: The Lady Panthers scored just 40 seconds into the match and never looked back in shutting out the Lady Bruins.

Amber Rutledge converted an assist by Emma Hunt, and Haley Trunkett scored on an assist by Alexis McCarthy for a quick 2-0 lead. Janelle Rutledge scored her first goal of the season on an assist by sister Amber Rutledge at the 10-minute mark and the Lady Panthers were able to shuffle the lineup.

Carolina Forest’s Sara Padula and Bailey Provencal had one goal and an assist apiece, and Kirsten Mann and Katelyn Perry added goals. Cameron McWhorter was relieved by Amber Rutledge in goal for the shared shutout.

* Socastee 4, Conway 1: The Lady Braves (3-3, 3-0) remained undefeated in Region 6-4A over the Lady Tigers (3-4, 1-2).

Socastee’s Katelyn Price posted a hat trick and Cagla Cetin scored the Lady Braves’ other goal. Zakera Chadmon scored the lone goal for the Lady Tigers.
