Soderberg’s 65 has Chants in contention for Seminole title

Coastal Carolina senior Sebastian Soderberg shot a career-low 65 Saturday  to move from 13th into a tie for first and the Chanticleers carded a 2-under 286 to remain in third place at the Seminole Intercollegiate, played at the par-72, 7,172-yrad Southwood Golf Course.

The 50th-ranked Chanticleers will enter the final round Sunday five strokes out of first (280-286=566), trailing host and 17th-ranked Florida State (277-284=561) and #36 Mississippi State (278-284=562).

Soderberg, who tied a then career-low with a 67 in the final round of CCU’s General Hackler Championship Tuesday, is 13 under par over his last three round, shooting 71 Friday and his 65 today. Soderberg’s 36-hole total of 136 (71-65) not only ties him with Florida State’s Daniel Berger for first, but ties Soderberg’s best two-round score and ranks sixth on the CCU chart behind Dustin Johnson (133, 1334 twice and 135 and Sam Lyons 134).

Soderberg, who had 11 pars and no bogeys, birdied his first two holes and three of his first five to make the turn at 3-under par. After a par on hole 10, Soderberg reeled off three straight birdies and birdied the par 3 17th hole for his 7-under 65.

Ben Wheeler moved up one spot into a tie for fifth. The sophomore stands at 5-under par 139 after two rounds (69-70). Wheeler’s 139 after two rounds is his career best by two strokes. Wheeler was 2-under par through nine, getting birdies on holes one and nine, and traded two birdies for two bogeys on the back nine for his round of 70.

Roberto Ballesteros it tied for 33rd (71-75=146), Andrew Dorn is in 38th (69-78=147) and Easton Renwick is tied for 59th (80-76=153).

Sophomore Peter Valasek, playing as an individual, shaved four strokes off his first round score (75) to shoot 1-under 71 Saturday. He is tied for 33rd with a two-day 146.
