Softball: Conway wins title; NMB seeks five-day crown

consoft-edwardsswingThe Conway Lady Tigers capped an undefeated run in the Grand Strand Softball Classic with a 16-3 victory over Sidney (NY) on Wednesday to claim the championship in the three-day tournament at Market Common.

Conway senior Kady Edwards went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, including a solo home run in the first inning. Anna Watson (1-1, run scored), Rebecca Parker (1-1), Chelsea Mitchell (2-4, run scored), Coker Edge (2-4, two runs scored) and Ashlyn Hardwick (2-3, two runs scored) led the Lady Tigers at the plate.

The winning pitcher was Chelsea Mitchell (1-0), who came in to pitch in the top of the fourth with a tie score of 3-3. Conway erupted in the fourth and fifth innings to secure the win, pounding a total of 16 hits and capitalizing on several errors by Sidney.

The Lady Tigers travel to Sumter for a key Region 6-4A match with a playoff berth at stake at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

* North Myrtle Beach 15, Good Counsel 5: The Lady Chiefs scored six runs in the first inning and six more in the sixth to remain undefeated in the Grand Strand Softball Classic five-day tournament.

The Lady Chiefs (15-1) pounded out 13 hits, led by Makala Gore’s 3-for-5, three-RBI effort at the plate. Myatt Hardwick, Noel Mishler and Sloane Siler cranked out two hits apiece, and Rayni Newman, Victoria Lewis and Taylor Hardwick had one hit each and four combined RBIs.

Hansis also got the win on the mound to run her record to 13-1. She allowed only four hits to keep the Lady Chiefs in the hunt for the GSSC title. They return to action Thursday looking to keep their title hopes alive.

* Auburn (NY) 4, Myrtle Beach 2: The Lady Seahawks suffered a hard-fought defeat to be eliminated from the Grand Strand Softball Classic.

Myrtle Beach freshman Rylie Troxell who went 2-3 to lead Myrtle Beach. Keocia Walker was 1-4 with a triple and a run scored and Emmalee Ballard was 1-3 with a run scored.

The Lady Seahawks return to action on Monday for the second week of the Grand Strand Softball Classic.
