Softball: St. James, Conway roll through playoff debuts

sjsoft-17pitchSt. James softball team picked up in the playoffs where they left off in the regular season by easily handling Crestwood 8-1 in the first round of the Class 4A softball playoffs.

St. James pitcher Brooks Spiva scattered seven hits over the same number of innings, striking out three with only one walk to get the win. Crestwood’s lone run came in the sixth to break up the shutout.

St. James was led at the plate by Dominique Gross, who went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, two runs scored, a home run and a triple. The Lady Sharks managed only six hits but made them count.

The top-seeded Lady Sharks will welcome Beaufort on Saturday.

* Conway 6, Spring Valley 1: The Tigers scored all six of their runs in the first inning and cruised the rest of the way to a first-round victory over visiting Spring Valley.

Neci Hemingway pitched a complete-game three-hitter and had an RBI double. Conway had only four hits, half of them by Taylor Richardson (2-3, run scored). Allyson Lundy added an RBI single.

Conway advances to host Fort Dorchester on Saturday at 10 a.m.

* Darlington 9, Myrtle Beach 8: The Lady Falcons scored three runs in the sixth inning to defeat the visiting Lady Seahawks in the first round of the playoffs.
