Softball: Sharks, Seahawks, Panthers deliver big wins

sjsoft-15The St. James High softball team took out a tough week of frustrations on non-region rival Waccamaw on Wednesday in a 14-5 road victory.

After suffering back-to-back region losses to first-place teams North Myrtle Beach and Georgetown by a combined score of 21-7, the Lady Sharks came out on the good end of a lopsided score, sparked by a nine-run third inning.

St. James out hit Waccamaw 15-5, led by perfect days at the plate by Sydney Cook (4 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored) and Dominique Gross (3 for 3 with five RBIs and one run scored). Stephanie Spaziani went the distance to get the win.

* Myrtle Beach 11, Lake City 5: The Lady Seahawks scored a key region victory behind a strong outing by pitcher Carly Grace Bodge, who allowed only two hits while striking out six.

Mckenzie Coble had a big day at the plate by going 2 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored.  Victoria Howard, Morgan Compton, and Deriica Burgess also had two hits apiece, and Mattie MacDonald had a two-run base hit in the sixth inning.

The Lady Seahawks return to action Thursday against socastee before a big region game at St James on Friday.

* Carolina Forest 8, Sumter 0: The Lady Panthers used a five-run explosion in the fifth inning to pick up a region win over the host Lady Gamecocks.

Carolina Forest got an RBI single by Katie Endres, a two-run single by Desi Santos, and a two-run double by Jordan Martin to break open a tight game in the fifth. Martin racked up two RBIs on three hits to lead the Lady Panthers.

Carolina Forest’s Emma Liles kept Sumter off the scoreboard for all seven innings she was in the circle. She pitched a shutout, allowing no opposing players to cross the plate on eight hits while ringing up seven.
