Softball: Sharks, Seahawks blast late HRs to cap rallies

mbsoft-wilsonswingThe St. James High softball team pulled out some comeback magic against North Myrtle Beach for the second time this season to claim a 7-2 victory over the visiting Lady Chiefs on Friday – this time with one swing of the bat.

Trailing 2-0 with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, St. James’ Kenley Daves hit a grand slam that proved to be the game-winner for the Lady Sharks. In their first meeting, St. James erased a late 3-0 deficit to beat the Lady Chiefs.

North Myrtle Beach starting pitcher Cissy Doolittle was cruising until the fifth, when the Lady Sharks loaded the bases and Doolittle was lifted for Emmalee Ballard. Daves delivered the big blow, and St. James tacked on three more runs in the sixth.

St. James pitcher Brooks Spiva went the distance for the win, and she got lots of run support in the form of home runs by Kelsey Gollie and Alysa Ayala, who went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Daves went 2-for-4 with four RBIs, and Maquenzie Schult went 2-for-3.

North Myrtle Beach matched St. James’ 10 hits on the day, led by Ballard and Andi Crimminger’s 3-for-4 outings.

* Myrtle Beach 4, Wilson 3: The Lady Seahawks rallied to force extra innings and won the game in the eighth to down the Lady Tigers on their own field.

Training 3-1 in the top of the seventh, Myrtle Beach’s Alexis Burford singled and later scored on Cayce Roberts’ RBI double. Roberts scored the tying run on a fielder’s choice by Mckenzie Coble, and Myrtle Beach held Wilson scoreless in the bottom of the frame.

In the eighth, Leah Belack led off with a solo home run to put the Ladsy Seahawks on top. Myrtle Beach pitcher Carly Grace Bidge capped her seven-strikeout and complete-game victory with a 1-2-3 bottom half of the eighth.

Myrtle Beach returns to action Tuesday with a big region game against st. James.
