Softball: Lady Tigers turn to small ball for big comeback

consoft-buntThe Conway High softball lineup is filled with heavy hitters, but the Lady Tigers turned to some small ball to rally for a 7-6 victory over Penn Yan (NY) in Tuesday’s second round of the Grand Strand Softball Classic.

Trailing 6-0 and unable to put together enough offensive firepower to get on the scoreboard, Conway (10-7) successfully laid down eight bunts and took advantage of several Penn Yan errors to mount the comeback win.

Conway’s Ashlyn Hardwick scored the winning run from second base on a bunt attempt that was mishandled. Joining in the bunt-hit parade were Kady Edwards (2-3, run scored), Taylor Richardson (1-2, walk, run scored), and Ashley Rowell (1-2, double, run scored).

While the Lady Tigers were picking away at the deficit, Conway pitcher Breanna Van Deusen (2-3) was doing her part by holding batters at bay. She struck out seven and allowed only five hits to earn the win.

Conway will play in the third round at noon Wednesday at Market Common.

* North Myrtle Beach 17, Chautaugua Lake (NY) 0: The Lady Chiefs (14-1) exploded for 16 hits, including five in the first and seven in the the third to break open the second-round game.

North Myrtle Beach’s Kieran Lawson pitched a four-hit shutout and Makala Gore went 2-for-5, but both hits were home runs for a total of four RBIs. Rayni Newman went 3-for-5 and Victoria Lewis and Sam Asbury added two hits apiece.

* Myrtle Beach 19, Newark (NJ) 0: Seventh-grader Serrah Ballard picked up her first win of the season for a no-hitter for the Lady Seahawks.

Top hitters for Myrtle Beach were Keocia Walker (3-3, two doubles, two runs scored), Bailee Wise (2-for-2), Mckenzie Coble (2-4, three RBIs, two runs scored). Ballard helped her own cause by going 1-1 with four walks and two RBIs.
