Spartanburg Day star stops Saints shy of sixth state title

cambhoops-staterunnerupA season that started as an unknown experiment came up one win away from a sixth state championship for the Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach boys basketball team at Saturday’s SCISA Class 2A final.

The Saints’ late run to the title game ended when they encountered state power Spartanburg Day and SCISA Player of the Year and tournament MVP Zion Williamson, who poured in 51 points to almost single-handedly outscore CAMB himself in a 76-52 victory at the Sumter Civic Center. Spartanburg Day led from start to finish and answered every charge the Saints attempted to mount.

Despite the disappointing finish, the Saints (20-12) won six straight games to reach the championship tilt – an unlikely final destination after they started the season 5-9. Welcoming two talented senior transfers – Bryce Schneider from Myrtle Beach and Justin Busby from Waccamaw – the otherwise young Saints needed time to put it all together as a team.

It was also a transition season on the Saints’ bench as program founder Darren Gore was passing the torch to co-coach Colin Stevens. Gore capped an incredible decade at the helm of the program, winning five state titles and amassing an astounding 199-81 record. His players had hoped to send him out with a milestone 200th victory and a sixth state crown.

Schneider finished his high school career with an all-around performance of 15 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Busby scored nine points to join Schneider on the all-tournament team. Sophomore Michael Green scored 16 and will be back to lead the Saints next season under Stevens’ direction.
