Sun shines on second day of practice; CCU sets fan dates

As the Coastal Carolina football team took the practice field for Day 2 of preseason camp, an afternoon rain shower stopped to clear the way for a good two-hour session Friday.

After head coach Joe Moglia singled out the defensive backs Thursday, the offense held the upper hand Friday in seven-on-seven skeleton passing drills.

The defense did take control early, forcing what would have been a coverage sack on the first play. Then, on play three, Aramis Hillary found Niccolo Mastromatteo for a score. Overall in the first session, the offense barely came out on top, winning eight of the 15 plays. In addition to the Mastromatteo TD, Hillary found Matt Hazel and Adrian Sullivan for scores.

After a break for individual position drills, the session two of the seven-on-seven drills commenced. The offense dominated early, completing passes on each of the first five plays. Highlighting the streak was a second Hillary-to-Sullivan score. The offense would go on to win 11 of the 15 plays, including an Alex Ross to Hazel score.

“We started today and will work to perfect having a rusher come in on the quarterbacks during skeleton drills,” Moglia said. “It does not do either side much good to just have the quarterback sit in the pocket. He needs to get a feel for the rush and make adjustments, just as he would in a game.”

Coastal Carolina, wearing just helmets for days one and two, will add shoulder pads for practices three and four this weekend and don full pads on Monday.
