Swimming: MB girls place second; CF posts top 10s

mbswim-2014Local swim teams got off to a splashing good start to the 2015 season in Saturday’s Ripley’s Aquarium Invitational, the largest high school swim meet in the state.

Featuring more than 440 swimmers from 21 of South Carolina’s top boys and girls programs, the sixth annual event saw the Myrtle Beach girls finish second in their home pool at Pepper Geddings Recreation Center.

Myrtle Beach’s Olivia McGonigal took first in the 100 back and second in the 100 free to lead the Lady Seahawks. Kennedy Drew won the 100 free and was third in 200 free, and Danielle Flaherty placed second in 200 IM. The Lady Seahawks also won 200 medley relay. Isaiah Ivey won 100 back for the Myrtle Beach boys.

Socastee’s Jenn Paul won the girls 200 free, and Eddie Bateson claimed the boys 50 free.

The host Carolina Forest boys and girls swim teams turned in solid showings, finishing in the top 10 as teams while breaking three school records, five automatic state qualifying times and numerous personal bests. In girls action, Socastee was eighth, Conway was 10th and North Myrtle Beach was 12th.

The Carolina Forest girls finished seventh overall. The Girls 200 Medley Relay team had a fourth place finish and made the state cut with a time of 1:58.43. Elizabeth Gatley, Taylor Steele, Ashley Woodall and Alexis Porfilio made up the squad.

Elizabeth Gatley received an automatic state cut in the 200 Freesytle with a sixth place finish and a time of 2:06.79. Gatley earned her second individual and third overall state cut with the 100 Backstroke. She took home the silver medal with a 104.10.

In the girls 100 Breaststroke Taylor Steele qualifies for the state meet with a time of 1:13.22. In the girls 200 Individual Medley Steele placed fifth with a time of 2:25.86, which just missed another state cut.

The girls relay went back to work and turned in fifth place finish in the 200 Free Relay with a time of 1:51.36. The team consisted of Anna Fortenberry, Jensen Helgeson, Ashley Woodall and Alexis Porfilio. The girls finished the meet with a fifth place finish in the 400 free relay with a time of 4:06.17.

The Carolina Forest boys placed 10th overall, led by an eighth place finish in the 200 Medley Relay. Jack Vaught, Grice Fortenberry, Liam Zevgolis and Connor Steele broke the school record that was standing since 2008.

Zevgolis not only qualified for the state meet with an eighth place finish and a time of 23.28 but also broke another school record. Connor Steele turned in a 54.28 in the 100 Free, earning him a seventh place finish just missing the state cut. They also placed sixth in the boys 200 Free relay, just missing the state cut by a little over a second.

* The Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach swim team had another big day at the Northwood’s Academy Meet in Goose Creek as the Saints continued to set personal-best times and added 10 more state cuts.

Hannah Surface led the day by nailing the 200 Freestyle, 100 Freestyle and the 100 back.  Miles Washington made his 2015 debut with state cuts in both the 50 free and 100 breast.  Will Jackson added to his list of achievements in the 200 IM and the 50 free.  Sabrina Blanchard also added two with the 200 freestyle and the 5o freestyle.  Amanda Tregde, who was just shy last week in the 100 free, was able to accomplish making the cut.

Anson Vossberg in his first meet of the season dropped an amazing 14 seconds, getting his best time, just 2 seconds away from the 100 breast.  Newcomers Alec Burlingame and Shelley Sellers both had a great first in the 50 freestyle and 100 breast, Shelley also joined the 200 freestyle relay team.
