Syracuse QB transfer joins five CCU mid-year signees

ccufoot-syracuseqbCoastal Carolina head football coach Joe Moglia announced the addition of six mid-year signees. All six are currently enrolled at Coastal, will participate in spring practices and eligible for the fall of 2017.

Syracuse graduate transfer Austin Wilson (6-2, 220) will provide the Chants with some much-needed help at the quarterback position after the Chants finished the 2016 with their fourth-stringer at the helm. He will join defensive linemen Jeffrey Gunter (6-4, 225) and Jalin Walker (6-2, 300), offensive linemen Brock Hoffman (6-3, 300) and Kenneth Sims (6-4, 305), linebacker Michael “Cam” Makins (5-11, 200).

Wilson, from Camp Hill, PA, graduated from Syracuse in December 2016 with a degree in Child and Family Studies and will be pursuing his Master’s in 2017 at Coastal Carolina. He spent four years at Syracuse, completing 49-of-85 passes for 418 yards with a touchdown and seven interceptions.

Gunter, from Durham, NC, comes to CCU from Riverside High. As a senior, he was named All-PAC 6 and Durham Herald-Sun All-Area. He had 55 tackles, including 12.0 for losses with 8.5 sacks, and an interception. He also made the 2015 All-PAC-6 as outside linebacker after tallying 28 stops with 6.0 going for losses.

Hoffman, from Statesville, NC, was invited to the Blue-Grey All-American Bowl and was selected to play in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas. He made first team NCPreps.com 3A All-State and is a second team American Family Insurance All-North Carolina (all divisions) as named by USA TODAY High School Sports.

Makins, from Lithonia, GA, played at Stephenson High and was rated a three-star recruit by 247Sports.com. He was named first team All-Region 4-6A and first team All-DeKalb County. He tallied 107 tackles as a senior with 20 going for losses, had 91 tackles as a junior.

Sims, from Simpsonville, SC, comes to Coastal from Hillcrest High via Georgia Military College, where he played two seasons and will have two seasons of eligibility with the Chants. He helped GMS to a 9-2 record, ranked 14th in the NJCAA. He was a teammate with current Chanticleer Jamarion McBride.

Walker, from Laurens, SC / played at Laurens High and was selected to play in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas. He was named first team American Family Insurance All-South Carolina (all divisions) as named by USA TODAY High School Sports and All-Region 2-5A.
