Tennis: Panthers, Braves score critical region wins

socgten-joelThe Socastee High girls tennis team took two steps closer to capturing the Region 6-4A championship this week with a pair of close wins over region rivals West Florence and Conway.

After battling to a 4-3 victory over the Lady Knights on Wednesday, the Lady Braves claimed a 5-2 win over the Lady Tigers to improve to 8-3 overall and, more importantly, a perfect 6-0 in league play.

After scoring wins at No. 1 and 2 singles and No. 1 doubles against West Florence, Anna Brice Cox and Joy Renfrow repeated the feat on Thursday to put the Lady Braves within one match of a win.

This time two Lady Braves delivered, with No. 4 Marie Bennedetti and No. 5 also claiming straight-set victories.

For Conway, No. 2 doubles were won by Ally Thompson and Julia Hagerud. No. 3 singles Jesse Miles gave the Lady Tigers their lone singles win.
