Tennis: Socastee, MB sweep region rivals in returns

The Socastee High girls tennis team returned to the court for the first time in nearly a month on Wednesday, but the Lady Braves didn’t miss a beat.

Socastee scored a 7-0 sweep of region rival Carolina Forest, the same team and score it played in the last match before Hurricane Florence put the brakes on the season.

Socastee got singles victories from No. 1 Cassidy Cocca, No. 2 Brooke Rogers, No. 3 Wae Monchan, No. 4 Joy Renfrow and No. 5 Laurel Case.

Cocca and Rogers joined forces to win No. 1 doubles, while Ryleigh Caroline Williams and Nicole Mortel teamed up to take No. 2 doubles.

Socastee travels to St. James on Thursday. Carolina Forest plays host to Conway.

* Myrtle Beach 6, North Myrtle Beach 0: The Lady Seahawks swept the Lady Chiefs in Wednesday’s region opener and first match back from Hurricane Florence.

In singles, No. 1 Carrington Callihan won 6-1, 6-1 over Lorena Beltran; No. 2 Sarah Woodard won 6-0, 6-0 over Rachel Grove; No. 3 Cassidy Friend won 6-0, 6-0 over Mataysia Williams; No. 4 Carly Starnes won 6-0, 6-0 over Ana Phillips; and No. 5 Ava McCauley won 6-0, 6-0 over Sydney Petteau.

In No. 2 doubles, Kinsey McGonigal and Caroline Stokes won 6-0, 6-0 over Sarah Boyer and Lauren Brown.

On Thursday, the Lady Seahawks also swept region foe Wilsaon.
