The Citadel outduels Chants in extra innings for 3-2 win

ccubase-schaeferpitchCoastal Carolina scored first, but The Citadel scored single runs in the sixth, seventh and 10th innings to claim a 3-2 extra-inning win Tuesday night at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

In the 10th inning, Mason Davis reached on a one-out single and moved to second on a walk to Drew DeKerlegand. An error on a pick-off attempt at second allowed the runners to move up 90 feet. Bo Thompson walked, but on ball four a wild pitch allowed Davis to score. Tyler Griffin followed with a fly out to right field. DeKerlegand tried to score on the play, but Hering threw a strike to the plate for the third out and keep the score 3-2.

Coastal mounted a rally in the bottom of the 10th. Tyler Chadwick hit a leadoff double and Zach Remillard, who was 3-for-3, laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Chadwick to third with one out. Bulldog relief pitch Skylar Hunter (2-2) got a strikeout and fly out to end the contest.

Hunter pitched three scoreless innings and allowed two hits with three strikeouts to earn the win. Tyler Poole (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing an unearned run, a hit and two walks in 1.1 innings.

Coastal Carolina took an early 2-0 lead. Connor Owings started the bottom of the second with an infield hit, Kyle Jackson followed with a bloop single to center and Colin Hering loaded the bases with an infield single. Riley Norton brought home Owings by reaching on an RBI fielder’s choice. With runners on the corners and one out, Nick Oberg plated Jackson with an RBI ground out to shortstop.

The Citadel broke through with a run in the sixth. Davis singled and stole second. Thompson put runners on the corners with a bloop single to left field. Griffin followed with a sacrifice fly to center field, driving in Davis and cutting the Bulldogs’ deficit to one, 2-1.

The Citadel tied the game in the seventh. Calvin Orth hit a leadoff single and, after a sacrifice bunt, pinch hitter Austin Mapes lined an RBI single to left field, scoring Orth.

CCU starter Cole Schaeffer returned to his early-season form. The freshman allowed one run and four hits in five-plus innings with no walks and two strikeouts.

With a win over Coastal Carolina last week in Charleston, the Bulldogs claim their first season sweep over the Chanticleers since 1999 and just their eighth win versus CCU in the last 28 meetings.

Coastal Carolina will start a nine-game road swing Wednesday (April 2) when it travels to regional rival UNC Wilmington. First pitch is set for 6 pm at Brooks Field.
