Third-quarter explosion lifts Socastee over SE Raleigh

Socastee HS defeats Southeast Raleigh Magnet HS 22 to 12Following a frustrating first half that saw Socastee High miss out on three scoring opportunities, the Braves exploded for three touchdowns in the third period to prevail 22-12 over Southeast Raleigh in Saturday’s Derrick Law Firm Carolina Kickoff Clash.

Three different Braves rushers reached paydirt in the third quarter, beginning with Angelo Sauter’s 3-yard plunge to turn a 6-0 deficit into a 7-6 lead on Braxton Elvis’ PAT. But the lead was shortlived as Southeast Raleigh quarterback Dylan Parham hit Jaquell Taylor for a 71-yard TD strike. The conversion failed for a 12-7 advantage.

But the Braves (2-0) were undeterred and quickly marched down the field for what proved to be the game-winning score. Keyon Clora scored from 6 yards out and quarterback Jordan Hodge made a 2-point toss to Max Kjosa to give Socastee a 15-12 lead late in the third.

Socastee got an insurance TD on a 6-yard run by Hodge and the defense did the rest. Southeast Raleigh had another long TD pass called back by a penalty and lost a fumble deep in Braves territory late but were otherwise shut down by the Braves in the second half.

Socastee extended its regular-season winning streak to 27 games, a stretch that dates back to the 2011 season. The Braves go for No. 28 next week against rival Conway in the home opener for Socastee.
