Thorpe pitches Pelicans to series victory over Mudcats

pel-thorpepitchTommy Thorpe worked 5.1 innings of one-run ball and the Myrtle Beach Pelicans manufactured enough offense to win 4-2 Sunday at TicketReturn.com Field, taking three of four games from the Carolina Mudcats.

Thorpe (2-1) did not allow a run until the sixth inning, striking out five in the process.

In a scoreless game in the bottom of the first, Charcer Burks walked against Carolina (7-11) starter Matt Withrow (0-1) before stealing second. He then advanced to third after the throw banked off his foot and into the outfield. Ian Happ promptly drove him in on a groundball to first base to give Myrtle Beach (10-8) a 1-0 lead. Happ has driven in 15 runs over the last 16 times.

Trey Martin walked to begin the third inning before Burks bunted him to second. Three batters later, Yasiel Balaguert stroked a single to center to extend the Pelicans advantage to 2-0.

After Thorpe allowed a walk and a single with one out in the sixth, Ryan McNeil entered and surrendered a sacrifice fly, as the Mudcats cut the lead in half at 2-1.

McNeil worked a scoreless seventh, just before Myrtle Beach drew two walks to start the bottom of the frame. After a new Carolina brought on Sean McLaughlin, Gleyber Torres lined a double into left field to plate Cael Brockmeyer and make it 3-1 Pelicans. After an intentional walk to Happ, Balaguert drove in Martin with a sacrifice fly to centerfield, extending the Myrtle Beach lead to 4-1. Balaguert has registered 13 RBIs over the last nine contests.

James Farris recorded the final six outs for his third save of the season, yielding a run on two hits in the ninth inning.

Myrtle Beach has won seven of the last nine games and is currently at their high-water mark for the year.
