Tigers lose starting QB, fall to 0-3 in defeat to Sumter

Conway lost more than its third straight heartbreaker on Friday night. The Tigers (0-3) also lost their starting quarterback in a tough 34-10 setback to visiting Sumter.

For the third straight week the Tigers took an early lead only to see it disappear. Xavier Kinlaw’s 7-yard touchdown run gave Conway an early 7-0 lead on the Gamecocks.

After Sumter’s Jonathan Henry scored the first of three straight TDs for the Gamecocks to cut the deficit to 7-6, the key play of the game proved costly going forward for the Tigers.

Conway senior quarterback Daquinton Grady was slammed to the turf hard on his right shoulder in the second quarter and left the game, turning the ball over to junior Manning Feldner.

The Tigers turned an interception by DeAunte Sherman into a golden opportunity at the Sumter 2. But the Tigers were unable to punch it in and settled for a Will Smith chip-shot field goal for a 10-6 lead.

But Sumter made a nice two-minute drive before halftime, capped by a 20-yard TD toss to Henry out of the backfield. The Gamecocks took a 13-10 lead into the locker room, along with all the momentum.

Henry scored third straight TD on a 40-yard burst to open the second half and Sumter never looked back en route to payback win in a rematch of last year’s region-title showdown.

The road doesn’t get any easier for the Tigers next week as Conway visits No. 1-ranked Class 4A power Hartsville.
