Tigers WR Bryant will sit out for throat-slashing gesture

Clemson wide receiver Martavis Bryant will miss an unspecified portion of Saturday’s game against Wake Forest after making a throat-slashing gesture during last Thursday’s win over North Carolina State.

Tigers coach Dabo Swinney was unaware of Bryant’s actions until he watched a replay. The game officials also did not see the gesture on the field after Bryant scored the second of his two touchdowns.

“Martavis will play this weekend, but it will affect his playing time,” Swinney said. “He made an unacceptable gesture after scoring a touchdown, and nobody even knew about it until after the game. It’s one of those things that’s not representative of what we want, so there will be some team discipline involved.”

Swinney would not specify how long he would keep Bryant off the field against the Demon Deacons.

Bryant’s six receptions for 73 yards against the Wolfpack boosted his season totals to 10 catches for 160 yards. He is the team’s second leading receiver behind Sammy Watkins.

Last week, Alabama running back T.J. Yeldon sat out the first quarter of a win over Colorado State as punishment for a similar throat-slash gesture.

Bryant will be joined on the sideline by offensive lineman Isaiah Battle, who earlier was suspended for Saturday’s game after throwing an uppercut at a NC State player.
