Top 3 Reasons Athletes Should Strength Train

In today’s world, youth sports programs are becoming more competitive at a much earlier age, and the competition only intensifies as they progress with their playing career.

The 1% of athletes who are genetically gifted and display tremendous amounts of athleticism, both physically and mentally, can probably excel at any sport they choose.

Well, what about the other 99%?  These are the boys and girls that have to really work hard and train hard to achieve their success.  “Playing” the sport is no longer an option if you want to play at a competitive level.  To make the cut, to make the starting line-up, to dominant the competition, players need to be at the top of their game physically and mentally.

The following are my top 3 reasons why ALL athletes (regardless of their gender or the particular sport he or she plays) would benefit from a structured Off-Season/In-Season training program.

Top 3 Reasons Athletes Should Strength Train

  1. Improved Athleticism: Strength, power, speed, mobility and agility are only a few characteristics that describe a dominant athlete.  A proper training program designed specifically for the athlete can help him or her achieve those attributes necessary for their given sport.
  2. Resilience to Injury:  Unfortunately, injuries are common in most physical sports.  It’s usually not a matter of “if”, but “when” the rigors of the sport have a negative effect on the body.  However, athletes who regularly strength train using the proper exercises and technique reduce the negative impact of their sport on their bodies because their tendons, ligaments and muscles have been adequately strengthened before hand.   Furthermore, if an athlete does experience an injury, his or her recovery time is often reduced as compared to someone who was not participating in a training program prior to the injury.
  3. Mental Toughness: Forcing the mind and body to get comfortable being uncomfortable will help keep an athlete’s skills sharp under pressure.  Knowing that you’ve put in the extra work to be better than the next player will be critical when the “big play” happens.
