Torrez continues to sizzle; Pelicans open homestand

pel-torrezBehind a five-run fourth inning, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans outscored the Salem Red Sox 9-3 on Thursday night at LewisGale Field in the series finale. Daury Torrez took a shutout into the seventh, and a team effort offensively pushed the Birds to a series win.

Through three innings, the Pelicans (69-47, 28-19 second half) did not have a hit. They collected five, including three doubles, to plate five runs against Salem southpaw Daniel McGrath in the fourth inning. Cael Brockmeyer put the Birds ahead with a two-run two-bagger, Victor Caratini and Pin-Chieh Chen both laced RBI doubles of their own, and a fifth run came in on a throwing error.

Torrez allowed just five hits, all singles, and only two men into scoring position over the first six innings. With a 5-0 lead, however, he allowed back-to-back hits to open the seventh inning. A double by Wendell Rijo ended his night, and two runs scored in the inning. Tyler Ihrig finished off the frame, but the Red Sox had cut the deficit to three runs at 5-2.

The Pelicans starter Torrez (9-6) finished with six-plus innings of work, allowing seven hits but no walks and struck out five. Both runs allowed were earned, and he picked up his ninth win with the quality start.

Vosler’s home run, a solo shot, came in the eighth, putting the Pelicans up 6-2, and three unearned runs in the ninth inning capped the team’s scoring and put them ahead 9-2 headed to the last half inning.

Jordan Betts slugged a leadoff triple to open the bottom of the ninth off of David Berg, and he scored on a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 9-3. A two-out error by Carlos Penalver extended the ballgame, and Salem loaded the bases but failed to score again. Berg fanned Forrestt Allday looking for the final out, giving the Pelicans the 9-3 win.

McGrath (1-5) suffered the defeat, allowing three runs, all earned, in five innings.

With the win and a loss from Winston-Salem on Thursday, the Pelicans are now just one game back of the Dash in the second half Southern Division standings with 24 games left in the regular season.

With the series and road trip wrapped up, the Pelicans head back home to take on the first place team from the Northern Division, the Lynchburg Hillcats, for a three game series beginning on Friday night. First pitch on Friday from TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark is set for 7:05 p.m.
