Two homers spark happy homecoming for Cordell

pel-33The Myrtle Beach Pelicans scored four runs in the first and led the whole way in a 10-4 victory over the Lynchburg Hillcats on Monday night. Ryan Cordell, who played college ball in Lynchburg at Liberty University, led the Peli

cans with his first professional two-homer game and matched a career-high with five RBI. The 45-24 road record is the best in team history, passing the 2008 squad who went 43-28 on the road.

Myrtle Beach (33-30, 77-54) opened the ballgame with a four-run first off of Wes Parsons. With two outs, the Pelicans put five straight on base with two singles, two doubles, and a walk to score four runs. Cordell singled in the first run, Chris Grayson doubled in two, and David Lyon blooped a single for the fourth run.

In the bottom of the first, Chad Bell allowed a run, although it came unearned. With a man at second and one out, Sean Godfrey put down a bunt for a single, and Nick Vickerson threw off the mark to first base. A run scored on the play, trimming the lead to 4-1. The Hillcats (30-32, 64-67) tacked on another on an RBI single by Yohan Camargo in the second.

Cordell hit the first of his two homers in the third, a two-run blast, to retake a four-run lead at 6-2.

The Pelicans broke open the game in the fourth. The club loaded the bases on Parsons, who was lifted for reliever Navery Moore with two outs in the inning. In a seven-pitch at-bat, Royce Bolinger singled up the middle to knock in two more and extend the lead to 8-2.

Lynchburg scored two off of Bell in the fourth, getting a home run out of Camargo, his first.

The score remained 8-4 from the end of the fourth until the ninth. Sam Stafford fired two scoreless, no-hit frames, and Justin Sprenger twirled a one-hit shutout inning to send the game to the ninth.

The Pelicans added a final pair of insurance runs in the final frame off of Mauricio Cabrera. Bolinger singled, reaching base for the fourth time on the night, and Cordell clubbed his second homer of the game to bloat the lead to 10-4, which was the final score.

Bell (6-3) picked up the win, while Parsons (4-7) suffered the defeat.
