Volleyball: Region sweeps tie Chiefs, Seahawks at top

There was no rest for the North Myrtle Beach High volleyball team on Wednesday, but the Lady Chiefs didn’t appear to need any.

One night after sweeping rival Myrtle Beach on the road, the Lady Chiefs did the same to St. James, the only region team to beat them this year.

The inspired Chiefs (19-7-1, 4-1 region) avenged the earlier loss to the Sharks to keep their region title hopes alive. The two teams traded points for the first few minutes before the Chiefs broke away from a 7-7 tie in route to a 25-13 first set win.

From there the Chiefs never looked back and finished the night with two more convincing set victories of 25-11 and 25-14 for the 3-0 win.

North Myrtle Beach’s Sydney Bellamy led the scoring with 10 kills, followed by Kayla Henley’s eight. Maddie Roy had 21 assists and the Chiefs had seven blocks.

The Chiefs travel to Lexington for the Wildcat Invitational this Saturday and return to region play next week. Tied atop the region standings with Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach will host the Lady Seahawks next week with a region title likely on the line.

* Myrtle Beach 3, Wilson 0: The Lady Seahawks bounced back from Tuesday’s loss to North Myrtle Beach by sweeping the Lady Tigers by set scores of 25-8, 25-5 and 25-14.

Myrtle Beach was led by Danni Hix (22 assists, 1 kill, 12 service points) and Cassie Runyon (10 service points, 1 kill, 1 block). Caroline Brophy had eight kills, Kathryn Hollingsworth had five, and Karissa Morris and Darby Sheets had four kills apiece.

Dakota Hansen had nine service points, Megan McKewan had three kills, Lucia Sandoz had one kill and one block, and Kristiasha Myers made three assists.
