Walk-off homer gives Parra rare complete-game victory

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans won with a walk-off home run from  Christopher Bostick, 4-1 over the Winston-Salem Dash on Monday night at Pelicans Ballpark.

The homer made a winner of Luis Parra, who tossed the first nine-inning complete game of his career, the first in the league this season, and the first for the Pelicans since June 27, 2013. Myrtle beach has now six of its last seven games entering tonight’s game against the Dash.

The Pelicans (23-13) scored their first run in the fourth. Joey Gallo drew a one-out walk on eight pitches. After a Royce Bolinger single, Nick Williams doubled to the right center field fence to bring home Gallo. It was all the Pelicans would get in the inning; the team left eight men on-base Monday night.

Parra was masterful. On an efficient 96 pitches, he tore through the Dash lineup, who mustered just five hits, four of them singles, over nine frames. Pitching to contact, Parra walked two and fanned two. The only run he allowed scored on a wild pitch in the seventh inning after a leadoff double and a fielder’s choice. He retired the final eight men he faced and struck out the final batter he faced, Joey DeMichele to end the ninth.

In a tied game in the bottom of the ninth, Preston Beck began the rally. With one out, he doubled to right center field. The ball was booted by Jacob May, allowing Beck to get to third base on the play. The Dash reliever Zach Isler struck out Zach Cone for the second out of the inning. Winston-Salem (13-22) walked Chris Garia intentionally to put two aboard.

Bostick was next. He worked the count to 3-2 before smashing a line drive homer to left field to end the ballgame. The walk-off bomb was the first walk-off homer for the Pelicans since  Joe Maloney did so on June 16, 2013.

The Pelicans only pitcher on the night, Parra (4-1) earned the win. Isler (0-3) suffered the defeat.
