Wando wins Border Battle, host NMB captures third

South Carolina volleyball powerhouse Wando looked like they were on cruise control in Pool A of the SC vs NC Border Battle Volleyball tournament this weekend.

After defeating Carolina Forest (2-0) on Friday they rolled through Roxboro Community (2-0) and Myrtle Beach (2-0) Saturday morning. Pool A results: 1st: Wando (3-0), 2nd: Roxboro Community (2-1) 3rd: Myrtle Beach (1-2) and 4th: Carolina Forest (0-3).

In Pool B every team was battling for the top spot and it wasn’t until the last match that the outcome was sure. West Henderson with wins (2-1) against North Myrtle Beach, (2-0) vs Porter Gaud, and (2-1) over Hoggard took the top spot. Pool B results: 1st: West Henderson (3-0) 2nd: North Myrtle Beach (2-1) 3rd: Porter Gaud (1-2) and 4th: Hoggard (0-3).

The brackets were now set. In Gold, Wando would play North Myrtle Beach and West Henderson would take on Roxboro Community. In Bronze, Porter Gaud against Myrtle Beach and in Copper Hoggard would play Carolina Forest.

What looked like just another notch in the Wando belt got very interesting in Gold semi number one. In set 1 The North Myrtle Beach Chiefs came out firing on all cylinders to take down the 2017 5A State Runner up 25-10. Like all great teams Wando would gather its composure and win a hard fought second set 26-24 and the 3rd set 15-10 to make the Gold final. West Henderson had a much easier time in semi number two defeating Roxboro Community 2-0.

The Gold best of 5 final was a true Border Battle with one of the top teams from SC against one of the top teams from NC. It was what a Championship final should be. Big hits, great digs, and momentum changes. When the dust se3tled Wando would come out on top in a 5 set thriller (11-25, 26-24, 21-25, 29-27, 15-13). In Bronze Porter Gaud defeated Myrtle Beach 3-0 and in Copper Hoggard defeated Carolina Forest 3-2.
