Weather changes Week 10 rivalry games to Thursday

As if Hurricane Florence hasn’t already wreaked enough havoc on the high school football season, Mother Nature has thrown Grand Strand area teams another curve ball in Week 10.

Due to Friday’s forecast calling for heavy rain and winds, three rivalry week showdowns have been moved to Thursday night. North Myrtle Beach at Myrtle Beach and Conway at Carolina Forest are at 7 p.m. Socastee at St. James is set to kickoff at 7:30 p.m.

“We didn’t want to be in a situation where we are playing in a monsoon,” Myrtle Beach High coach Mickey Wilson said of the homecoming game. “We already lost one big gate this year with Carolina Forest because of the hurricane, so it was a financial decision and a safety issue.”

The No. 3-ranked Seahawks (6-0 overall, 3-0 region) look to avenge last year’s loss to the No. 9 Chiefs (5-2, 1-2), but more importantly stay on course for next week’s title showdown with No. 1 Hartsville. North Myrtle Beach needs a win to stay in the hunt for a playoff berth.

“Our kids are excited. Last year we were a young team and I think we had the ball in the red zone about five times, so that leaves a bad taste in your mouth,” Wilson said. “This is a tough region. We’ve had four teams ranked in the top 10 throughout the season, so our guys know if we can beat North Myrtle Beach we get to play Hartsville for the region championship.”

In Class 6-5A, Carolina Forest welcomes a resurgent Conway squad for a contest with huge playoff implications. The Panthers (6-1, 2-1) are coming off a tough first loss to West Florence and need a win, while the Tigers (3-4, 3-0) are in the midst of a turnaround after winning their third straight since the hurricane break. A victory would set up a region title showdown next week with the Knights.

The Battle of Highway 707 is all about pride as Socastee makes the short trip to St. James. The Sharks (0-6, 0-3) and the Braves (1-5, 0-3) won’t be playing beyond Week 11, so this both team’s best shot at a region victory and South Strand bragging rights.
