Week O Previews & Picks: Tigers seeking strong start

confoot-edwardsWeek 0 is finally here, and the Conway Tigers are itching to get on the field and show how far they have come in the offseason following last year’s second straight 2-9 record.

With returning offensive stars like seniors QB Peyton Derrick, RB Jah’Maine Martin and WR Bryan Edwards, it’s easy to see why the Tigers are eager to get after it. But they will have to beat the Bulldogs in the trenches to set the tone for a successful season

Conway makes the long drive down Highway 701 to Georgetown, where the Bulldogs are looking to turn things around too. But the Tigers need this one to raise their confidence level going into a tough non-region and region schedule. … Conway 25, Georgetown 12.

* West Brunswick at Socastee: The Braves are ready to unveil a new-look offense against the Trojans from north of the border, but the defense will have to step up now that their counterparts will no longer be controlling the clock with the triple-option. … Socastee 27, West Brunswick 13.

* Loris at St. James: The Sharks have come close to upsetting the Lions a couple of times in recent years but they haven’t been able to win in the Lions’ den. This time they get Loris at the Shark Tank with a new sense of confidence and against a young pack of Lions. … Loris 16, St. James 15.

* Dillon at North Myrtle Beach: If you think the eastbound traffic on Highway 9 is busy with tourists most Friday afternoons, wait until the Wildcats and the entire town of Dillon hit the road for the season opener. The Chiefs were wiped out by the Class 2A powerhouse Wildcats in last year’s matchup, but they will get to measure their improvement after one year under Blair Hardin against the three-time defending state champs. … Dillon 31, North Myrtle Beach 20.

* Carolina Forest at Darlington: The Panthers look to be much improved this season but the difficult early schedule might not make it immediately apparent. A new emphasis on the ground game should put the Panthers closer to striking range, but not against the Falcons. … Darlington 34, Carolina Forest 23.
