Week 10 Preview & Picks: Rivalry night comes early

For the fifth time over the past seven weeks, the Friday night lights will go dark. Don’t panic, football fans; no new hurricanes are targeting the Grand Strand. But a wet and cold forecast has moved the Week 10 rivalry games to Thursday.

Following the three-week break for Hurricane Florence, local teams returned to the gridiron on Saturday or Monday to allow for a full practice week. Three weeks later, the games have been moved to accommodate homecoming games and attendance gates.

Fortunately for Grand Strand area teams, they are no strangers to short practice weeks and adjusting on the fly. Look for three spirited rivalry games, just don’t look for them on Friday:

* North Myrtle Beach at Myrtle Beach: It seems every week we are saying the No. 3-ranked Seahawks (6-0 overall, 3-0 region) will finally get a tough test, yet teach week they seem to pass it with flying colors. Myrtle Beach quarterback Luke Doty’s seven-TD performance wiped out Wilson last week, while the No. 9 Chiefs (5-2, 1-2) were struggling with No. 1 Hartsville.

The Seahawks shouldn’t be looking ahead to their Week 11 region title showdown with the also-unbeaten Red Foxes, not while they are trying to avenge last year’s loss to NMB. The Chiefs need a win just to stay in the playoff picture. … Myrtle Beach 34, NMB 17.

* Conway at Carolina Forest: The Tigers (3-4, 3-0) have made a major turnaround since the hurricane, winning three straight regin games to tie West Florence for first place atop the division. But first Conway has to get past the Panthers (5-1, 2-1), who suffered their first loss of the season last week to the Knights. Look for the Panthers to make a strong stand at home against the streaking Tigers. … Carolina Forest 31, Conway 24.

* Socastee at St. James: The Braves (1-6, 0-3) and Sharks (0-6, 0-3) get their best chance at a region win against their neighborhood rivals in the Battle of Highway 707. Both teams are coming off tough losses, but look for the Braves to bounce back to put another one in the win column. … Socastee 30, St. James 27.

Last week 4-1; overall 28-5
