Week 11 Previews & Picks: Tigers work OT for payday

confoot-21diveWelcome to Week Whatchamacallit. The games that were supposed to take place Week 8 (which is actually Week 7 because the SCHSL starts with Week 0) are actually being played in Week 11 (or is it 10?) since Hurricane Matthew tacked on two weeks to the schedule.

Speaking of playing longer than planned, Conway has been putting in plenty of extra time on the gridiron lately. The Tigers have played a combined six overtime periods over the past fortnight,  including the Tigers’ thrilling triple-overtime win over Carolina Forest last week. that left both teams 2-1 in the Region 6-5A and needing another win to punch their playoff tickets.

The Tigers welcome a struggling Socastee team that was shutout last week by Sumter to fall to 0-3 in region. But this is a rivalry game, and the young Braves have shown flashes of progress. A tired Conway team must be on alert to nail down a postseason invitation at The Backyard. … Conway 37, Socastee 20.

* South Florence at Carolina Forest: The Panthers missed out on a chance to stay tied atop the region standings with Sumter as Conway counter-punched its way to a 51-48 triple-OT win at the Black Hole. Carolina Forest’s defense will respond after having the Tigers hang a half-a-hundred on the scoreboard. … Carolina Forest 34, South Florence 7.

* Myrtle Beach at St. James: The No. 2-ranked and undefeated Seahawks wrapped up a playoff spot last week, but they have their eyes on a bigger prize in the Region 7-4A title. They face a winless St. James team that was steamrolled by North Myrtle Beach last week. This one should be closer. … Myrtle Beach 42, St. James 14.

Last week 3-1; Overall 34-11
