Week Six Football Picks: Tigers, Seahawks ailing

Conway opens region play tonight, but perhaps not at full strength.

Tigers quarterback Mykal Moody, who suffered a concussion in Conway’s 21-12 victory over Myrtle Beach two weeks ago to claim the Victory Bell, had a bye week to recover but still hasn’t returned to practice.

The junior signal-caller is Conway’s leading rusher and passer. Backup Sawyer Jordan was solid in replacing Moody for the final 1 1/2 quarters against the Seahawks, but he is limited in what he can bring to the Tigers’ offense compared to Moody.

This pick all comes down to whether or not Moody can play, but I’m going with my gut and saying the game-time decision is a go and the Tigers get the W. … Conway 24, West Florence 14.

* Myrtle Beach at Socastee: Speaking of injuries, the Seahawks enter tonight’s game at Socastee looking like the walking wounded.

Myrtle Beach will be without several key players for tonight’s rivalry, but the backups were able to do th job last week against Wilson and should be able to do the same against Socastee.

The Braves’ triple-option offense could be trouble for a defense that has trouble stopping the run. This one could turn into a shootout, but the outcome will be the same. … Myrtle Beach 34, Socastee 23.

* Lugoff-Elgin at Carolina Forest: The surprising 5-1 Panthers enter region play after feasting on smaller-school opponents through the first half of the season.

But the Demons aren’t exactly the class of Region VIII-AAAA, coming off a 59-16 loss to Lexington. A defense that surrenders that many poimts is in trouble against a Panthers’ offense that boasts quarterback Danny Daly (15 TDs, one interception) and running back Harold Atkinson, who has over 800 yards rushing.

Look for the Panthers to begin their push for their first foray into the 4-A playoffs with a win tonight. … Carolina Forest 31, Lugoff-Elgin 17.

* North Myrtle Beach at Georgetown: The Chiefs are getting closer and closer to notching their first win under coach Perry Woolbright, but the 18-game losing streak won’t end tonight.
The Bulldogs are experiencing a turnaround season and are licking their chops for North Myrtle Beach to come to town. … Georgetown 27, North Myrtle Beach 7.
