Week 8 Previews & Picks: MB’s Wilson goes for 100

There has been some confusion over exactly when and where Myrtle Beach football coach Mickey Wilson will win his 100th game. About the only thing all can agree on, based on his Seahawks’ near-flawless play this season, is that there are many more to come.

Despite reports that he has already eclipsed triple digits, Wilson enters Friday’s game at Marlboro County with a 99-25 record. In his 10th season as head coach, he can reach the milestone with another performance like his No. 4 Seahawks (4-0 overall, 1-0 region) have turned in all season.

Just for a little statistical perspective, Myrtle Beach has outscored opponents nearly 2 to 1 (4,756 to 2,440) during Wilson’s tenure. That number is even more impressive this season, when the Seahawks hold a 191-26 advantage heading into the teeth of their tough Region 7-4A slate against top-10 opponents.

The Bulldogs are dangerous following a big loss to top-ranked Hartsville last week, and a wet field at a hostile McAlpine Stadium could be a trap game for Myrtle Beach. However, the Seahawks have passed every test with flying colors so far and avoid the upset. … Myrtle Beach 27, Marlboro County 13.

* St. James at Carolina Forest: The Panthers (4-0, 1-0) also look to remain undefeated and on track for their first-ever Class 5A region title. They face an outmanned and ill-prepared Sharks (0-5, 0-1) squad that played Monday and couldn’t practice Thursday due to school closures. The Panthers pull this one out and get ready for next week’s key region showdown with West Florence. … Carolina Forest 49, St. James 14.

* Conway at South Florence: The Tigers (1-4, 1-0) finally put it all together in the final quarter of last week’s 27-26 comeback win over Socastee. The return of quarterback Daquinton Grady and the momentum from the victory should carry over to this region matchup with thee Bruins that will have playoff implications. … Conway 24, South Florence 20.

* Darlington at North Myrtle Beach: The No. 6 Chiefs (4-1, 0-1) suffered their first loss of the season last week at Wilson and are now under the gun for playoff positioning. Perhaps the loss might finally light a fire under the young squad against the visiting Falcons. … NMB 28, Darlington 17.

* West Florence at Socastee: The Braves (1-4, 0-1) are still reeling from their loss at Conway – a game they had in hand until the final minutes but let it slip away. The Braves have to put that game in the past to hang with a hungry Knights squad. … West Florence 34, Socastee 20.

Last week 4-1; Overall 19-4
