Week 9 Prep Picks: Chiefs, Sharks battle for playoff position

A game that used to be for bragging rights only has extra incentive between two of the area’s most improved teams – North Myrtle Beach and St. James.

The Sharks can clinch a playoff berth with a second Region 7=3A victory, which would give them the head-to-head tiebreaker against NMB and Wilson.

The Chiefs can muddy the waters with their first region win, creating a probable three-way logjam for the fourth and final playoff spot, as well as secure at least a .500 season.

Both teams are better than their bottom-feeder status of recent history, but the Sharks seem to be playing their best football in the latter part of the season. … St. James 24, NMB 20.

* Myrtle Beach at Georgetown: The Seahawks and Bulldogs are battling for second place in the region after losing to Socastee over the past two weeks.

Myrtle Beach isn’t used to playing for second, and the Seahawks should roll into Georgetown with a bad taste in their mouths (and noses).

This one should be a shootout, with quarterbacks Tyler Keane and Caleb Hughes bring hot hands into the matchup, ut Myrtle Beach’s defense should be the difference. … Myrtle Beach 38, Georgetown 16.

* Wilson at Socastee: See Hunter Renfrow handoff. See Hunter Renfrow run right. See Hunter Renfrow make pitch.

See Socastee’s triple-option attack roll up more yardage on the ground than Wilson covers on the bus trip from Florence. … Socastee 44, Wilson 13.

* Conway at South Florence: After a rocky start, the Mykal Moody Machine, featuring sidekick Malcolm Green, is up and firing on all cylinders.

The Bruins also have a potent offensive attack, but they can’t keep pace with the Tigers’ tandem of Moody-Green (not to be confused with the Moody Blues). … Conway 41, South Florence 31.

* Sumter at Carolina Forest: The Panthers are looking to write a happy ending to a disappointing season, and the Gamecpcks may be their best shot at a region win from here on out.

Look for Carolina Forest to keep it close if the offense can avoid costly turnovers, but the Gamecocks may be too much for the Panthers defense to stop. … Sumter 34, Carolina Forest 27.
