Woolbright leaving NMB for Batesburg-Leesville post

woolbright2North Myrtle Beach High head football coach Perry Woolbright resigned his post from the school to take over the football program at Batesburg-Leesville High on Wednesday.

Woolbright departs after turning around a Chiefs’ program that suffered through 22 straight defeats, including his first two seasons (20 games) at NMB. His third season’s squad broke the streak in the first game of the 2012 season and went on to a 4-6 campaign before last year’s breakthrough. The Chiefs tied a school record for wins (9-3) and reached the second round of Class 3A state playoffs.

In a press release from the school, Woolbright expressed his gratitude to the school for giving him his first head coaching job.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here at NMB,” he said in the statement. “It is a great community to coach in and a great group of kids to coach.  I would like the thank Mr. Strawderman and Coach Quigley for all they have done for me at NMB.  I want to thank my coaches for being there with me the whole time and working hard.  I want to thank the community for all their support.  I will miss all the players I have had the opportunity to coach in my time here. I am also excited about my future at Batesburg Leesville High School.”

The release did not give a time frame for finding his replacement. Woolbright is the third football coach to leave a Grand Strand school this year. Carolina Forest coach Drew Hummel stepped down after the end of the 2013 season, and St. James coach Mark Fischer left to return his former job in Virginia.

North Myrtle Beach has lost coaches in all three major sports this year. Basketball coach Frank Moorhead and baseball coach resigned Tony Boyer stepped down after their seasons.
