Young Chants open season looking for points, leaders

ccuhoops-0dribbleWhen the Coastal Carolina men’s basketball team opens the 2013-14 season Friday night at Akron, the new-look Chanticleers might need name tags to get to know one another better.

Coastal welcomes seven newcomers to its roster. Kyle Buffkin, Colton Ray-St Cyr and Elijah Wilson join the team as true freshmen, while Josh Cameron, Aaron Law, Eric Smith and Shivaughn Wiggins join as transfers. Law and Wiggins will redshirt the 2013-14 season due to NCAA transfer rules.

The Chants return only five student-athletes in the front court, including four who have experience in the starting lineup. All five front-court returners have just one year of experience under their belts but look to play a bigger role than one season ago.

Senior post player El Hadji Ndieguene is the top returner of the group having started 27 games last season while averaging 6.1 points and 6.9 rebounds per contest. Coastal will look to several newcomers to make some instant impact on the team, especially in the back court.

For the first time since the 1991-92 season, the Chants will come into a season after losing a pair of 1,000 point scorers. CCU lost Brian Penny (1,208 points), Robert Dowdell (1,202 pts.) and DuWayne Cheatam (1,085 pts.) at the end of the 1990-91 season. The Chants said goodbye to Anthony Raffa (1,470 pts.) and Kierre Greenwood (1,199 pts.) at the end of last season. • The 1991-92 team went on to post a 1

The leading candidate is Smith, who joins the Chants after three seasons at South Carolina. Smith started 27 games last season for the Gamecocks but chose to spend his final season of eligibilty at Coastal and is pursuing his master’s at CCU.

Coastal edged Akron in overtime, 74-70, to open up the 2012-13 season with the first-ever game in the new HTC Center on the CCU campus. This time they will treave Coastal is 13-26 in road openers dating back to the 1974-75 season and 4-11 when opening the season on the road. Tipoff is at 8 p.m.
