Ten local track/field athletes qualify for state title meet

cftrack-pieterse3Socastee seventh-grader Anna Walker took a big leap against older athletes to tie for first place in the high jump in Saturday’s Class 3A Track & Field state qualifier in Hopkins.

Walker’s jump of 5 feet tied three others for first place, giving her the needed top-eight finish needed to advance to next week’s state championships. North Myrtle Beach sophomore Alexis Leonhart finished sixth in the same event to join Walker in next week’s finals.

North Myrtle Beach sophomore Drake Jenerette captured the eighth and final qualifying spot to earn a state championship berth in the 1600 meters with a time of 5:36.50.

In the girls 4×800 relay, Socastee missed out on a qualifying spot by a quarter of a second, finishing ninth. So did St. James freshman Felicity Weber, who placed ninth in the pole vault.

In boys action, Myrtle Beach’s Cordell Brown finished fifth in the shot out with a distance of 46-2 to advance to the finals. Seahawks sophomore Ethan Epstein (9:56.11) also claimed fifth place in the 3200 meters.

St. James’ Jake Loud finished eighth (45-1.5) in the shot put to advance, and freshman teammate Trey Myers (58.60) took sixth place in the 400 meter hurdles. Senior Tyrell Dukes settled for 10th in 400 meters (51.22).

In the Class 4A qualifier, Carolina Forest’s Jawan Butler took second place in the boys high jump with a leap pf 6-6. The Lady Panthers saw Lisa Pieterse claimed third in the girls 3200 meters (11:30.01) and she claimed the eighth and final spot in the girls 1600 meters (5:20.78).

Carolina Forest eighth-grader Kayla Watkinds was fifth in the long jump (17-06) and settled for ninth in the long jump to just miss out on two qualifications.

In girls action for Conway, Raven Grant placed sixth in the girls 100 meters with a time of 11.81 and the 200 meters in 24:91. The Lady Tigers just missed out in the 4z400 relay with a ninth-place showing.
