Pelicans return home after suffering shutout by Keys

pel-zagunisStarting in the place of Jen-Ho Tseng, Tyler Ihrig fired six scoreless innings, but the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, were shut out 2-0 by the Frederick Keys on Sunday afternoon at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium.

In a scoreless game in the seventh, Austin Wynns hit a solo home run, his second in as many days, off of David Garner to break the tie. The Keys (51-57, 19-19 second half) tacked on another run in the eighth inning to go up by the final score.

The Pelicans (62-45, 21-17 second half) had a bevy of opportunities to score on Sunday, but David Hess and Jon Keller turned them away. Myrtle Beach had a runner on in seven of the nine innings and loaded the bases twice with less than two outs but failed to put a run across.

Hess (6-4) scattered five hits and a pair of walks across seven scoreless innings to earn his sixth win. With the bases loaded and one out in the second, he struck out Daniel Lockhart and got Chesny Young to fly out to end the inning. After a leadoff double from Lockhart in the fifth, he induced three straight fly outs to escape the frame.

The Pelicans’ best chance to score came in the eighth inning when they loaded the bases with no outs against left-handed reliever Matt Taylor on a pair of walks and a hit batsman. Keller came on, however, and got Cael Brockmeyer to hit into a 1-2-3 double play before striking out Jordan Hankins to escape the frame. Keller worked a scoreless ninth around a single from Young to close out the game.

Ihrig, new to the roster as of Sunday, made the spot start for Tseng, who was a late scratch, and matched Hess zero-for-zero over the first six innings. Pin-Chieh Chen threw out Chance Sisco at home plate to end the first, and the left-hander didn’t allow another man to reach third base over his six frames. He allowed five hits and walked just one, recording three strikeouts in a no decision.

Garner (1-1) suffered the defeat, allowing the two runs on three hits, including the home run. He walked none and fanned two.

After a league-wide off day on Monday, the Pelicans pick up second-half play on Tuesday night at home against the Wilmington Blue Rocks. First pitch from TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark is set for 7:05 p.m.
